Registration is open for the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor’s (DLNHC) 11th annual half marathon, the D&L Heritage Half Marathon Run & Walk, that will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2022. The course will feature a new route that travels through three counties of the five-county Corridor – Carbon, Lehigh, and Northampton.
The new D&L Heritage Half route is a flat, out and back course. It will start at Riverview Park in East Penn Township and follow the former Lehigh Valley Railroad from Riverview Park south to Slatington, cross the Lehigh River, and continue north on the Lehigh Navigation towpath in Walnutport. Participants will then reach a turnaround point and return to Riverview Park. The journey will entail a peaceful route with breathtaking views of the Lehigh River, with a flat pathway that is coated with crushed limestone and has only 70 feet of elevation change. It is a great route for first-time marathon runners and is particularly inviting to competitive walkers.
Registration for the D&L Trail Challenge is open as well. The D&L Trail Challenge encourages people of all ages and abilities to walk, run, or roll four cumulative half marathons (full marathons for cyclists) throughout the month of October. Participants can log miles at their own pace out in nature, around the neighborhood, or from the comfort of their own home. The virtual challenge started in 2020 as a replacement for the in-person half marathon but has made a return each year due to high popularity.
Along with the altered route, also new this year are individual and team fundraising options. Participants can choose to start a fundraiser to honor a loved one, tell their health and wellness story, challenge friends, and show support for the DLNHC. For those who wish to form “teams” to start a fundraiser as a group or form an affinity association, the team fundraising option helps foster those communities.
For those who do not want to run or walk in the race, but still want to partake in the event: DLNHC is recruiting volunteers. Individuals or groups can sign up to assist with pre-race efforts, as well as race-day needs. All volunteers receive a commemorative T-shirt, free lunch on race day, and the opportunity to make the event memorable for everyone involved.
Interested participants can register for the D&L Heritage Half and/or the D&L Trail Challenge at race.delawareandlehigh.org/ by clicking the “Register” button in the top right-hand corner of the website. Interested volunteers can use the Race Info tab on the race website to see more information and find the link to sign up.
The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that preserves the historic pathway that carried coal and iron from Wilkes-Barre to Philadelphia. Today, the D&L connects people to nature, culture, communities, recreation, and our industrial heritage. For more information, visit delawareandlehigh.org/
The D&L Half Marathon Run & Walk and D&L Trail Challenge function as the biggest fundraisers for the DLNHC, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the organization, our programming, and the D&L Trail where it takes place. Both programs have high local participation and are some of the most walker friendly events in Pennsylvania.
