Home Recycled Home: April Showers of Flowers

The moment I saw this idea, I knew I had to make one (or two, or maybe I’ll even make a third if I can get my hands on another umbrella). We all have an umbrella with a slightly bent spoke, one that has been in the garage for a decade or more…unused. Let’s turn those umbrellas and silk spring flowers into a wonderful front door decoration!

  • Umbrella
  • Flowers—silk or real
  • Pastel spray paint (optional)
  • Craft or white school glue
  • Door hook
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon or colorful swatch of fabric
  • EXTRA: To customize your umbrella for Easter, add clean eggshells and moss around the flowers.

Step 1: If your umbrella has been living in the garage for a few years, it may need to be cleaned up a little before repurposing it as a decoration. You may also want to paint the umbrella if the colors or logos are not in your color scheme. A leftover can of spray paint will work just fine.

Step 2: Arrange the flowers in the umbrella so the colors will work well when pressed flat against a wall or door.

Step 3: Add moss, eggshells, and other decorations to the brim of the umbrella for added spring flair.

Step 4: Add a small bit of glue to the ribbon and attach it to the umbrella. Tightly tie a bow to secure the flowers, moss and other items in the umbrella. You may need to rearrange your flowers after this step to ensure the decoration will still lay flat against the door.

Step 5: Using an over-the-door or plain door hook, hang the umbrella on the outside of your front or add color to any door inside the home.
