Slatington Sports Stories

Slatington150LogoHigh school sports create a lot of memories for student athletes in their four years. Add 146 more years full of memories and one could write a book about them.

Mike Hofmann Jr. is doing just that as he is chronicling Northern Lehigh/Slatington High School athletic history for the athletics portion in the book Slatington at 150: More Stories to Share.

The book, which will be available for delivery in late December, is compiled by a committee in charge of celebrating the 150th anniversary of the town of Slatington. Members of the committee, in addition to Hofmann, are: Robert Stettner, Candyce Merkle, Tim Snyder, and Judy Snyder.

Hofmann, who is a 2011 Northern Lehigh graduate, is known for his passion for Bulldog athletics. The current Moravian College student and member of the Greyhound track and field team, was a three-sport student athlete in high school and is also a volunteer girls’ basketball coach at NL.

The sports section of the collection of memories includes yearly record of the various teams, championship squads, NCAA division I student athletes, professional athletes, and members of the Ring of Honor, among other topics.

Hofmann discussed his extensive research for the project.

“I was more than excited to write about the history of Northern Lehigh athletics. Going into the research stage of this book, I thought I knew a vast majority of Northern Lehigh sports history; however, I could not have been more incorrect. The information I have uncovered will be interesting and thought-provoking to not only the novice Northern Lehigh athletic supporter, but also those who have been around since the days of Slatington High School.

“It is truly a one-of-a-kind publication.”

Only 500 copies of this unique book will be printed. One can reserve a copy for $50 by picking up and filling out an order form in the Slatington Public Library as well as the Slatington 150 store on Main Street in the borough of Slatington.

Anyone who would like to contribute anything, such as stories or vintage photographs, to the sports portion of the book can email Hofmann at
