From the Editor’s Desk 1/15/13

Vince Lombardi, the legendary Green Bay Packers coach, is one of many football icons that are larger than life. Lombardi’s achievements with the Packers alone are impressive: three straight league championships and five in seven years, winning the first two Super Bowls in 1966 and 1967. He was also one of the earliest coaches to be open about his disdain for abhorrent and racist Jim Crow laws and the color barrier that still existed in the NFL during that era. There is a reason the National Football League’s Championship trophy is named after him. More than anything Lombardi believed in the power of hard work and sheer willpower, as any of his popular quotes illustrate. One of my favorite “Lombardisms” is: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” Words to live by in this post-holiday season of adopting weight loss plans and other means of achieving the goals we were so resolute about at the beginning of the new year. You just have to keep chasing perfection and you’ll achieve your goal, whatever that may be. Even if you do slip up and overindulge on Buffalo wings at a Super Bowl party. Hard work, discipline, will power are the Lombardi way, and words to live by if you want to keep your resolutions for 2013. One more thing, loyal Gazette readers and friends, I wanted to direct you to our Facebook page for web exclusive content and contests.
